Description
The sweet, pleasantly scented yellow berries of this plant, which is related to the Chinese lantern flower, are now considered a delicacy in Europe and also have beneficial health effects. It is native to South America, where it grows as perennial plants. Before its great success as an edible fruit, it was known primarily as the “Andean berry” or “Cape currant”, as it was grown in both Peru and South Africa. In colder climates of Europe it can grow excellently as a pot plant and can be overwintered and propagated sheltered from frost.
